Everyone sometimes has those difficult working days that just don't seem to go by. With annoying colleagues or a boss who accumulates minor tasks with you. But that does not mean that you have to laugh and just accept it. Being sympathetic should not be your only key to success.

Standing up for yourself

You want to be respected and one way to get that collective thumb up from your colleagues and managers is to stand up for yourself. Four moments are described below when you have to stand up for yourself at work.

1. If you drown in your work

It often happens that you lose the overview of what you still have to do. That only becomes more difficult if more and more are added. It is important to learn to say 'no' when people ask if you would like to take anything on. By always agreeing, your mountain of work keeps piling up.

2. If you do not get the assignments you want

Instead of walking a path that you know is not for you, or passively watching how the next major assignment goes to another colleague, you plan some time to talk to your manager about your professional goals, ideal assignments and what you would like to work on. Chances are she needs to be informed about your career goals - and occasionally reminded. So don't be afraid to schedule a follow-up conversation!

3. When your colleagues take the honor away

It is very annoying if you have worked hard on something and someone else takes the honor away. It is therefore perfectly normal to say something about it. You can only control the situation when you get there. And with control we mean that you gracefully straighten it out without throwing someone in front of the bus.

4. When a conflict with a colleague touches you emotionally or disrupts your work

If a conflict between you and another colleague adversely affects your workflow, or if you feel personally attacked, you should bring this to the attention of your supervisor. Everyone with the Nice Girl Syndrome knows the nauseating or boiling feeling that can provoke a confrontation with a colleague. So don't go into it unprepared. Give clear examples in a calm way. Indicate in the conversation what you need and what you would like to see.
