Airbnb has announced it will offer free or subsidized accommodation to up to 100,000 people working in healthcare that fight the corona virus.
The initiative aims to provide shelter for people who can no longer live in their own homes due to their medical work against the virus. Airbnb hosts can sign up by offering an entire home that meets new cleaning and safety protocols through Airbnb's Open Homes platform, which offers free housing in disaster-stricken areas. Airbnb waives the usual cost if hosts cannot provide free accommodation.
To help people find housing through the platform, Airbnb partners with government agencies, businesses and non-profit organizations, including the Red Cross and the International Medical Corps. The company has also established a fund for those willing to make donations, with 100% of all proceeds going to nonprofits working to help with COVID-19.
'Medical personnel and first responders provide life-saving support during the coronavirus outbreak and we want to help, ”said Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia. “We've heard from countless hosts around the world that they want to bring home to the heroes of healthcare.” Airbnb co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky tweeted that 12,000 hosts signed up for the initiative within six hours of the new platform went live on Thursday.
