It is the big question of many expectant mothers: can your baby hear you in the belly? The answer is: yes, a little bit. New research has shown that babies cry in different "languages." For example, the crying of a German baby often goes from high to low sounds, whereas with a French newborn it is exactly the other way around. They have a rising intonation, characteristic of the French language.

When babies come into contact with a tone language, such as Mandarin, they start to cry more complexly. Swedish babies are crying in a singing way. The researchers conclude from this that babies already in the womb are strongly influenced by the sound and intonation of the mother. Babies can distinguish the rhythm and melody of their mother's voice in the third trimester of pregnancy.
