No need to go anywhere, a nearly empty agenda and working on your kitchen table with all your own stuff within reach. When everything was still normal, it probably sounded like a dream. Just don't have to do anything for a week. It has been the reality for many for almost a month now and it sometimes turns out to be quite a mental challenge. But you can do this, especially with these tips you can keep a cool head!
1. Get enough exercise
Movement is key. That may be more true now than ever. Because all those days at home you can really worry. Take a walk, jump on your bike for a block or, if you're not comfortable with that, look for a short workout video on YouTube. You can choose whether you want something exuberant or rather yoga. The offer is endless.
2. Don't think too far ahead
The situation as it is now can seem pretty hopeless. It is therefore important not to look too far ahead. Live from day to day and think no further ahead than tomorrow. If you look back with a dissatisfied feeling at the end of the day, that's okay. You might see what you would like to do differently tomorrow, but don't be too hard on yourself!
3. Don't check the news too often (this also applies to your social media)
The news can have a very negative effect on your mood. Therefore, check the news in moderation and preferably at set times. Also try to determine when you are inclined to worry more and then skip those news sites. Tomorrow is another day!
4. Video calling is the new deal
Of course it is very unfortunate and it takes some getting used to that you cannot just visit your family and friends. However, that doesn't mean you can't speak to them at all. There are many different video calling apps and the possibilities are endless. Play a game remotely or start puzzling while drinking a wine with a friend from a distance.
5. Baking and roasting
Bake a lemon tart, try that new brownie recipe or experiment with your dinner. Especially if you are usually inclined to rush your meal, this is a good time to be consciously busy in the kitchen. It can be quite fun. And if you are still cutting vegetables, you can take that moment to pay attention to your breathing. Breathe deeply through your nose from your stomach for four seconds, hold your breath for four seconds, and then exhale slowly, in about eight seconds. Repeat this a few times and you will find yourself relaxing.
