Maybe you want a partner who is humorous or caring or one who does not wear white sport socks. Yet that is not the most important thing. People around the world prefer that their loved one is ... friendly.
Researchers from the British University of Swansea asked 2,700 students from five different countries to shorten a list of character traits to what they really thought was important. Both in the Eastern countries (Singapore and Malaysia) and in the Western cultures (Australia, Norway and the United Kingdom) one quality was undisputed at the top: friendliness.
Participants received "partner dollars" that they supposedly could spend on properties that their dream man or woman had to meet. They could choose from factors such as physical attractiveness, good financial prospects, kindness, humor, desire for children and creativity.
Kindness always ended up at the top. After that, men almost always preferred physical attractiveness, while women considered the financial perspective more important. It is remarkable that money and beauty follow so soon after kindness and, for example, humor is less important.
