Hands up if you are a victim of static hair every winter. Once it is cold, wearing a hat and scarf is essential. But that trendy beret is one of the reasons why you look like a 'crazy' scientist at the end of the day.

Cause

What actually causes static hair? Surely it is no shock (you understand?) That it has to do with electricity. When two similar materials rub against each other in dry weather (in this case your cap and your hair), it causes the electrons to bounce from one surface to the other. The individual hairs will withstand and separate from each other, creating the messy look.

Prevent

For anyone with medium to long hair, static hair is one of the winter's problems, because it difficult to style. But the good news is that there are solutions. We have some tips on how you can easily fix and prevent static hair.

1. Use a moisturizing shampoo

In dry seasons such as winter, when the air is a lot less moist, it is important to use a moisturizing shampoo to prevent the hair from becoming extra brittle.

2. Oil

The famous hairdresser Alex Brown recommends that you use a nourishing oil when your hair is wet. This ensures that your hair retains more moisture and therefore has less chance of becoming static.

3. Switch to an 'ionic' hair dryer

An ionic hair dryer uses ion technology. They radiate negative ions that cause your hair to become static while blow drying. And, they make sure that it shines and sheds less.

4. Clean your hairbrushes

Just like the brushes you use to apply makeup, your hairbrushes also need a good cleaning. "Deep cleaning of your brushes with clear soap - such as washing up liquid - helps remove all product build-up," explains Brown.

5. Nourishing cream

Texturizing products, such as a sea salt spray, usually contain alcohol and can dry out the hair, which you want to avoid in the winter. Use a nourishing product instead when styling your hair.
