Flight delays can cause a lot of stress and travelers often do not know if they are eligible for financial compensation. In Europe, EU261 legislation sets out what travelers are entitled to for delays of three hours or more, with compensation ranging from € 250 to € 600. Now a new app has been launched, which always offers users a payout when a flight within Europe is delayed by an hour or more. But there is a snag.
With Colibra, users can add their flight information up to 20 minutes before take-off and before delays. You can already get money back with a delay of 60 minutes. However, there is one thing to keep in mind. By using the app you must first agree to waive your right to a potentially larger payout through the EU261 guidelines.
By using the app you hope that when you fly is delayed, this will not last longer than three hours (you would receive a higher compensation through the EU scheme). According to the company, their system results in more frequent payouts for the average passenger, with one-hour delays more likely than three-hour delays. Colibra takes the risk of paying users before the claim is received from the airline, therefore the company collects 20% of the fee. Payouts range from € 20 to € 110.
