During the cold winter months, sweaters are an indispensable part of our wardrobe. We do our best to keep them as soft and beautiful as possible. This is how you prevent your favorite sweater from fluffing or taking pills.

1. Washing machine

For clothing that you suspect is going to pills, it is useful to carefully choose the program of your washing machine. The slower the movements and the shorter the washing cycle, the less your sweater will be damaged. For optimum protection, a hand wash is the best option.

2. Turn around

Turn the garment inside out before washing. This prevents excessive wear of the fabric due to other clothing, zippers and buttons.

3. Sort

Sort clothing well before washing. Washing delicate items in the same load as jeans will cause more wear and damage to the fabric.

4. Full machine

Make sure the washing machine is not too full. By cramming too much, there is no room left for clothing to move easily. Due to the small amount of space, the fabrics rub against each other, which can lead to pills.

5. Detergent

Do not use detergents or harmful bleaches that can weaken the fibers. Choose a detergent and fabric softener that will damage the fabric as little as possible.

6. Dryer

Avoid the tumble dryer. The fibers are damaged by the friction with other substances. Hang your sweaters on the clothesline. It may not be as soft as in the dryer, but you will keep your sweater looking much longer.

One of the most effective ways to remove the pills is to use of a cloud jam or a battery-operated fuzz remover that gently shaves the surface of the fabric. This can also be done by hand using a razor blade.
