When temperatures rise, this is often accompanied by unwanted visitors, such as flies, mosquitoes, spiders and ants. With these tips from vtwonen you keep pests out in a natural way.

Plants help you

Plants are a good and sustainable way to keep pests out. A carnivorous plant may sound lurid, but it is practical. Flies, mosquitoes, fruit flies; the carnivorous plant protects your house against everything that buzzes and crawls.

Or opt for a plant with a strong scent, such as lavender. Flies, fruit flies and ants prefer to stay as far away as possible. Place the plant in a beautiful pot on your windowsill, countertop or bedside table and you immediately have a fragrant accessory for your interior.

Herbs as a defense

Not only strongly scented flowers, also herbs because of their scent, thyme, mint and lemon balm are natural pest controllers. Mosquitoes do not like acid scents, such as citronella and lime grass.

A basil plant on your counter helps to keep flies away. Do you suffer from fruit flies? Then put a little sage or a clove of garlic in the fruit bowl. Garlic works well against insects anyway, especially mosquitoes and flies turn around when they smell it.

Ants are kept out by sprinkling some cinnamon or pepper where they crawl in. Do you not want to have wasps during the barbecue? Then cut a lemon or orange in half and put a few pieces of clove in it.

Care for a clean house

Pests have little to do with a clean and tidy house. Food scraps, wet areas and dirt guarantee ants, cockroaches and flies. Therefore, vacuum regularly, do not leave dirty dishes and keep your kitchen counter clean.

Prevent fruit from rotting and keep food in a sealed container so that pests cannot access it. Vermin loves hot, humid spaces. Try to keep the humidity in your house below 50 percent.

Spiders and mosquitoes often end up on moist potting soil and stagnant water. Change flower water regularly and do not give your plants too much water.

Place mosquito nets in front of windows and doors

The best way to keep pests out is not to give the bugs an opportunity to get in. Place a fly screen in front of your doors and windows to prevent insects from flying in or crawling in.

You can place insect netting on ventilation holes and grilles. Make a round every summer with the caulking gun along small corners, holes and cracks in the house to close it. That way you know for sure that there are no secret sneak and crawl routes for vermin. You can also give nature a helping hand by turning your garden into an insect paradise - they won't even want to go inside.

Nothing helps?

If the above measures don't help, it's time for coarser guns. Although vermin may be annoying, insects are useful for nature. Preferably do not kill them.

Do you suffer from a plague or do the pests continue to invade your house? Do not work with pesticides yourself, but contact a professional. He knows exactly how to handle that and what is and is not allowed.
